Frustration is growing in Elim after the case against four men accused of killing Glen Nkuna (38) was postponed again in the Waterval Magistrate’s Court. The four — Silence Madima (22), Pfano Mukwevho, Rofhiwa Tshisema and Clifford Munungufhala (all 19) — appeared briefly in court on Wednesday, 18 March.
The matter could not proceed because the magistrate handling the case was unavailable. Two other suspects, aged 16 and 17, did not appear. Their identities cannot be published as they are minors.
Nkuna’s body was found next to the gate of Elim Hospital at about 03:00 on Sunday, 8 March. He was declared dead at the scene.
Outside court, scores of residents gathered, some visibly angry. After the proceedings, they held a meeting where questions were raised about who may have led the group of young suspects.
Community members said they believe an older person known in the area may have played a role in the incident but has not yet been arrested. They also called on police to arrest the driver of a green bakkie allegedly used to transport the suspects on the day of the killing.
“We don’t have a problem with the postponement if police are still investigating. But in the end, we want justice. We want them to be sentenced,” said Nkuna’s younger brother, Wisani.
During the first court appearance, it was alleged that the accused had intentionally killed Nkuna. The case was postponed to 25 March. Bail applications are expected to be heard on the next court date.
