The ABC Motsepe League match between Vondwe XI Bullets and Mpheni Defenders at Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday ended in dramatic fashion after a controversial penalty decision led to a disruption. The match, locked at 1-1 at the time, was ultimately decided by a penalty kickâwith no goalkeeper in Bullets' net.
From the opening whistle, the match displayed all the hallmarks of a tense local derby, with both sides squandering early scoring opportunities. Defenders nearly broke the deadlock in the second minute when Halatedzi Matumba's half volley went just wide, with the goalkeeper already beaten. Bullets responded three minutes later, but Khathutshelo Madzhuta failed to convert after breaking loose from the centre of the pitch.
Defenders eventually took the lead in the 38th minute when Matumba unleashed a powerful shot, giving his side a 1-0 advantage at half time. However, Bullets struck back eight minutes into the second half, with Madzhuta finishing off a well-worked build-up to level the score.
The turning point came midway through the second half when Defenders' striker, Thomas Makuwa, was brought down inside the penalty area. Referee Tshepo Manenzhe immediately pointed to the spot, a decision that was fiercely contested by Bullets' players and officials. In protest, Bullets' management ordered their players to leave the field and gather near the technical bench.
Despite efforts by the referee and match commissioner, Nkhumiseni Nyambeni, to persuade Bullets to resume play, the team refused to back down. After a lengthy delay, the referee instructed Defenders to take the penalty without a goalkeeper in the net. Freedom Nyundu converted with ease, blasting the ball into the empty goal.
Match officials remained on the field for approximately 15 minutes before the referee blew the final whistle.
This was the second consecutive match involving Bullets that ended in controversy. Two weeks ago, their fixture against Musina United at Makhuvha Stadium was also abandoned before full-time. At the time of our going to press, both teams and match officials were yet to submit their reports on Sunday's events.
