The number of violent crimes in the Vhembe region keeps rising as yet another young man was stabbed to death at a tavern last weekend.

Aubrey Davhula (41), a resident of Maranzhe village, became the latest statistic when a fun day out turned into a tragedy. Although details around the circumstances that led to his death were not clear at the time of our going to press, his father, Mr Tshimangadzo Davhula, told the media that Aubrey had gone to watch the soccer game between Maranzhe and Mukumbani in Mukumbani village on Sunday, 20 March. After the game, Aubrey and some of his friends apparently went to a nearby tavern, called Philiyamavu, in Tshilapfene village near Mukumbani. At some point during their drinking spree, some of the customers allegedly started complaining that their car keys had been stolen, with Aubrey among the suspects.

"We are deeply sad about the tragedy. Aubrey was a handsome young boy. It is really unacceptable what had happened, and we hope that whoever was behind his death gets to face the might of the law," said Davhula.

Aubrey's sister, Ms Mpho Masikhwa, said she had gone to the scene of the crime soon after they had heard that her brother had been attacked and stabbed. On her arrival, Aubrey was lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds to his body. He was already certified dead by then.

The Davhula family appeals to anyone who might be willing to help them with the funeral expenses to please contact Mpho Masikhwa on 079 839 3507.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the incident and said that a case of murder had been opened. No suspects had been arrested so far, but a manhunt was launched.
