The mayors in three municipalities in Limpopo, including Makhado and Vhembe, are expected to be replaced. This follows the interview process held in Mokopane on October 10, where the fate of 12 mayoral candidates was discussed.
No changes are expected in the Collins Chabane Municipality, even though interviews were held for this position. Based on leaked information, Shadrack Maluleke will return to his position as mayor.
The national executive committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) has resolved that the mayoral-candidate-selection process must be rerun in the Vhembe District and Makhado Local Municipality. After the 2021 local elections, consensus could not be reached as to who should fill these positions, and Samuel Munyai and Dowelani Nenguda were retained as temporary mayors.
Rumours have it that Nenguda, Munyai, and the executive mayor of the Sekhukhune District, Maleke Mokganyetji, will be removed from their positions. Munyai is expected to be replaced by the current Speaker of Makhado Municipality, Cllr Dorcus Mboyi. Nenguda will seemingly be replaced by the Speaker of the Vhembe District Municipality, Fridda Nkondo.
Provincial ANC spokesperson Jimmy Machaka confirmed that the interviews were held but said that the national office of the ANC had not yet made a final decision on who would be replaced.
He said that during the 2021 local government elections, interim arrangements had been made in the Vhembe District Municipality and the Makhado Local Municipality. Machaka said that what was now left was for the national officials of the ANC to peruse the report on the interviews conducted and communicate the decision.
