Artists should pace themselves this festive season

Artists should balance maximizing festive season earnings with professionalism, safety, and long-term sustainability. Avoid over-scheduling and repetitive performances to maintain credibility and audience engagement. Prioritize quality and innovation to ensure continued success beyond the holiday rush.

The festive season is in full swing and, for arts practitioners, it is often the most lucrative period of the year – arguably the most important on the calendar. It therefore makes sense to maximise earnings before the inevitable slowdown that accompanies the back-to-school period. That said, the pursuit of high returns must be balanced with realism, professionalism and responsibility.

Artists should not accept performance bookings without thorough logistical planning. There have been instances of performers being scheduled to appear at as many as six venues in a single night. Such arrangements involve excessive travel, physical fatigue and a high risk of missed appearances. They endanger lives and, just as importantly, erode professional credibility.

In the rush to increase cash flow, artists must remain mindful of long-term relationships, future opportunities and personal safety. Sustainability in the creative sector is not measured solely by December earnings, but by whether artists remain dependable, bookable and healthy when the next season arrives.

Beyond scheduling concerns, performers must also reassess their approach to live shows. A growing trend has emerged in which the same stage movements, set lists and performance structures are repeated from one event to the next. Once audiences attend a single performance, they can often predict what will follow at subsequent shows. Over time, repetition dulls the experience and audience interest begins to fade.

Sustained growth in the industry requires creativity, freshness and consistent effort, even during the demanding festive period. Introducing variation, incorporating live elements or improving audience engagement can significantly elevate performances and preserve excitement.

As the festive season continues, performers and promoters are urged to prioritise safety, quality and sustainability. A successful December should not be measured only by the number of bookings completed, but by whether artists emerge from the season ready, respected and in demand for the year ahead.
