Students at the University of Venda (Univen) are set to gain valuable digital skills and innovation opportunities following the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Technology Forum (ATF).
The five-year agreement, signed on Friday, 6 March, aims to strengthen collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), digital innovation, and technology-driven talent development.
Univen spokesperson Dr Takalani Dzaga said the partnership will prepare students for the fast-changing global digital economy while positioning the university as a regional centre for technological innovation.
“The MoU establishes a strategic partnership to build digital and technological capacity among students and researchers while contributing to Africa’s broader innovation ecosystem,” Dzaga said. He added that the collaboration will equip students with future-ready skills in AI, data science, and emerging digital technologies.
“The partnership will promote research collaboration, encourage interdisciplinary innovation across faculties, and bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical technological application,” he added. Students will also gain access to advanced digital skills training, innovation competitions, hackathons, and opportunities to develop technology prototypes that address societal challenges.
Univen Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Bernard Nthambeleni welcomed the partnership, calling it a milestone for the university’s innovation agenda. “This collaboration aligns perfectly with our 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, which emphasises entrepreneurship, innovation and digital transformation,” he said.
African Technology Forum representative Ms Ntsoaki Mohapi said the organisation is committed to ensuring African students play a meaningful role in shaping the continent’s technological future. “We believe African students must not be left behind in the artificial intelligence revolution. Through this partnership, we want them to become creators of technology, not just consumers,” she said.
The collaboration will also establish an ATF Student Chapter at Univen and promote technology solutions addressing challenges such as rural healthcare, agricultural productivity, education access, and digital inclusion.
