Police appeal for information following Mhinga ATM bombing

Seven suspects are being sought after an ATM was bombed in Limpopo, causing R500,000 damage, though no money was stolen. Police were alerted by a tamper alarm and found the machine severely damaged by explosives, with the suspects having fled empty-handed.

Police in Limpopo are searching for seven male suspects after an ATM was bombed at a supermarket in Mhinga village in the early hours of Friday, 24 April.

The blast caused extensive damage to the machine, estimated at R500,000, but the suspects fled without taking any money.

According to police, the incident was reported shortly after an employee of a monitoring company received a tamper alert on his laptop, indicating that the ATM door had been forced open. He immediately alerted police in Saselamani, who responded to the scene.

On arrival, officers found the ATM had been severely damaged using explosives. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects targeted the unguarded machine before fleeing empty-handed, as there was no cash inside at the time.

A case of malicious damage to property has been opened.

Police have appealed to anyone with information to come forward. The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Maanda Sumbana, can be contacted on 072 267 7346. Tips can also be shared via Crime Stop on 08600 10111, at any police station, or through the MySAPS app.
