The Department of Education's Vhembe East district office, led by Dr NG Rambiyana, obtained third position at the 2022 National Education Excellence Awards, in the category for Top Performing District, with the highest number of NSC mathematics and physical science passes between 2019 and 2021.

The awards ceremony was held for the eighth year on Thursday, 7 April, at the Coastlands Hotel in Umhlanga, Durban, with Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga presiding over the awards under the theme "Celebrating Excellence in Districts and Schools, and Building Back Better with Integrity".

Dr Rambiyana told Limpopo Mirror that being recognised felt good, but he reckoned that this was not their best performance. "We wish to get back to our usual performance standards," he said.

Rambiyana has served as director since 2007. He attributes the district's excellent performance in mathematics and physical science to the good relationship educators have with the education unions. "We are looking forward to doing better in future by encouraging more learners to participate in these subjects," he said.

MEC for Basic Education Polly Boshielo applauded Vhembe East's sterling performance. "You have represented the province very well. We know that the past two years have not been easy, but with dedication and commitment you have pulled through, despite unpalatable circumstances. We also know that it required a delicate balance to survive against all the odds. In you, we will continue to trust and have confidence that the education of our children is in safe hands. We truly appreciate what you have done for your district and schools," said Boshielo.
