Workers' representatives, invited guests and representatives from Musina Municipality all agreed that a lot of improvement had been recorded after the appointment of a well-known health practitioner, Mr Ntovhedzeni Ligege, as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of Messina Hospital.

This was revealed during the inaugural Messina Hospital Exceptional Awards last week. The awards are the brainchild of Ligege, who said he wanted to inspire workers to work hard to serve local people with courage and determination.

Despite a shortage of resources and work force, the hospital recently scooped two district awards (revenue collection and zero maternal deaths) and one provincial award (zero maternal deaths) under Ligege's leadership. Last week's award ceremony was meant to celebrate these achievements and to honour individuals who have displayed excellence in their work.

When addressing the award recipients, Ligege said he felt there was a need to introduce the award ceremony at the hospital to inspire the work force. "The trophies and certificates we are handing you here today should give you courage to do more. When we do more than what is expected of us, our communities benefit more. We all need to enjoy our work and feel comfortable when we are assisting community members. We are also aware of our challenges, but we need to derive opportunities from these challenges to serve our communities."

Cllr Prince Sakala from Musina Municipality said the government was very pleased to see Messina Hospital employees performing and excelling in their respective areas of work.
