Last weekend was a bad for one of the Vhembe ABC Motsepe League sides, Joe Maweja.
They lost their league match 0-1 to Great North FC at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday and also lost 0-1 to FC KK in their Amos Shield Charity Tournament at the Tshakhuma Malaria grounds the following day.
Realizing that it would be difficult for them to match their elder brothers, FC KK decided to abandon their positions and rely on counterattacks. Although the pattern brought much pressure on their defenders, FC KK looked comfortable with it as they managed to create some moves from behind, causing Maweja to lose possession easily as they crossed the goal line.
The referee, Mr Avhasei Simba, reprimanded Tshililo Makondelela of FC KK with a card, following an illegal tackle on Khumbudzo Muvhango. Maweja's striker, Mashudu Mukhari, missed a fortune in the 19th minute. He received a neat pass from his captain, Dakalo Ratshitanga, within the box and watched in disbelief as his volley went wide.
Maweja replaced Thabelo Ntshauba and Makonde Murendeni with Omphulusa Masotsha and Sheriff Mudalahothe respectively. FC KK responded by introducing Itani Ngange and Rofhiwa Maraga for Mpho Ratombo and Mashudu Makushu. The goal that secured FC KK a place in the final came in the 74th minute. Itani Ngange tried his luck from the 35-meter area. The keeper of Maweja, Khuliso Simba, fumbled with the ball before it crossed the goal line.
The goal gave FC KK more reason to play defensive football for the remaining part of the game.
