Beitbridge repatriations face delays over missing documents

Repatriation efforts at Beitbridge Port of Entry are facing delays as buses arrive without essential documentation, including Emergency Travel Certificates and valid cross-border permits.

Beitbridge Port of Entry is experiencing delays in the repatriation of foreign nationals after buses arrived without the required documentation.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) said 8,230 people were processed for repatriation between 12 and 24 June, including Malawian and Zimbabwean nationals transported in more than 130 buses.

On 25 June, 17 buses were turned away after arriving without Emergency Travel Certificates (ETCs) and were redirected to Musina. The BMA also said some buses lacked cross-border permits, while some drivers did not have passports.

Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato said all documentation must be completed before buses arrive at the port of entry.

“The port of entry will not be used as a waiting area for buses,” he said, adding that all verifications must be completed at the Musina Refugee Reception Centre before arrival at Beitbridge.
