Bereaved family warns of fundraising scam after death of “The Gyad”

The family of late content creator Mpho Netshinombelo, "The Gyad," has issued a public warning about scams exploiting his death. They urge mourners not to send money to his hacked WhatsApp account and to only use the single official account for funeral contributions.

The family of popular content creator and social media personality Mpho Netshinombelo, widely known as “The Gyad”, has warned the public about a scam targeting mourners in the wake of his death.

Netshinombelo (27), from Tshikota village, died after being struck by a vehicle along the Vivo road outside Louis Trichardt last week. Makhado police have opened a culpable homicide case, and investigations are ongoing.

While the local digital community continues to mourn his passing, the family says opportunists have begun exploiting the tragedy.

“It has come to our attention that the WhatsApp account of our late son has been hacked. Please do not send any money in response to messages from his number, as these are scams,” the family said in a statement.

They described the situation as “deeply heartbreaking”, adding that it is painful to see individuals taking advantage of their grief for criminal gain.

The family emphasised that only one official account has been set up to receive financial contributions towards funeral arrangements.

“Please note: This is the only account that will be used for contributions. Only this page will communicate all funeral arrangements,” the statement read.

Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and verify information before making any payments.
