What inspires a young artist from Malamulele to blend traditional Tsonga sounds with modern music and touch millions? Blackmyth shares his story, creative process, challenges and dreams in this exclusive interview.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in music, and how does your Tsonga heritage influence your art?
A: My belief in and love of music started at a very young age. By the time I knew what a career was, I already knew I wanted to become a musician. For me, music must reflect who you are, what you believe in and where you come from. That's why my Tsonga heritage has a huge influence on my art.
Q: Can you tell us about your musical journey so far? What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
A: My musical journey has been beautiful, full of highs and lows, and truly inspiring. Sometimes people overlook your worth as an artist, but working hard is the only way out because, sooner or later, your worth will be recognised.
Q: Your music blends traditional Tsonga sounds with modern styles. Can you walk us through your creative process and how you achieve this unique blend?
A: I grew up around music, with my older brother and sister being teenagers when I was young. I was exposed to pop culture early on, but also to Tsonga music because of where I come from — Malamulele. One day, it just clicked to put these influences together and create something new.
Q: What themes do you typically explore in your lyrics, and how do you hope your music resonates with your audience?
A: I play around with feeling, understanding and nostalgia. The audience must find it easy to connect with something in their lives or within themselves. I want my music to bring peace and healing.
Q: What has been the most memorable moment in your music career so far?
A: My song Axi Kona recently hit a million streams on YouTube — that was incredibly rewarding. It's proof that all the times I chose not to give up really paid off.
Q: You've worked with some notable artists already. Can you tell us about your experiences collaborating with them, and what you've learned from these partnerships?
A: I allowed myself to be patient and observant, learning how they do their work. These collaborations remind me I can always take my music further than it is now.
Q: What are your plans for the future? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you're excited about?
A: I'm excited about the future! I'm currently working on an EP, with the lead single Shayla featuring Blissbouy and Una Rams. I can't wait to share it.
Q: How do you balance your artistic expression with commercial success?
A: I pay close attention to lyricism, making sure it's balanced — not too much English, not too much Xitsonga. I use words common in South African languages to connect widely while staying authentic.
Q: How do you engage with your fans, and what role do you think they play in your success?
A: I interact with my fans both on social media and in real life. I'm deeply grateful to them — they've played and still play a huge role in my growth and success.
Q: Are there any specific messages or emotions you hope your fans take away from your music?
A: Peace, love and light …
