Long-distance runner Ritshidze “Bullet” Makhavhu from Ha-Mamuhoi in Nzhelele delivered a commanding performance to claim victory at the 2026 Vhembe 3-in-1 Easter Half Marathon, held in Thohoyandou on Saturday, 4 April.
Makhavhu powered through the demanding course to cross the finish line in an impressive time of 1 hour and 9 minutes, securing first place ahead of a competitive field. The race, known for its steep hills and testing terrain, drew athletes from across the province, but it was “Bullet” who proved unstoppable on the day.
Speaking to Limpopo Mirror after his victory, Makhavhu described the race as both challenging and rewarding. “The race was amazing from start to finish. The organisation was excellent,” he said.
The victory marks another milestone in what is shaping up to be a breakthrough year for the talented athlete. Just weeks earlier, Makhavhu competed in the CDM Marathon in Polokwane, finishing fifth in a time of 2 hours and 26 minutes. He also secured third place in the Mazuwo 2-in-1 10km race, clocking 31 minutes and 20 seconds.
Reflecting on his latest triumph, Makhavhu remained humble and grounded.
“I felt happy and grateful after winning. I thank God for giving me the strength. This is not just about winning, but about faith, discipline and trusting the process,” he said.
With his sights firmly set on bigger stages, Makhavhu is now preparing for the upcoming ASA Championships in Durban, where he plans to compete in the full 42.2km marathon.
“I want to represent Limpopo and South Africa at international level,” he said.
Beyond personal success, the Nzhelele-born runner also dreams of uplifting others through sport.
“My goal is to start a foundation or academy to support young athletes and help them realise their potential,” he added.
Gladness Athletics Club president Tendani Phunyuku praised Makhavhu’s determination, describing him as a future national star.
“If he continues like this, he will soon represent South Africa. He is an inspiration to many young athletes,” said Phunyuku.
