After several years without producing a new album, veteran reggae musician Burning Doctor, whose real name is Callet Lisoga, has made a long-awaited return with his latest release, Dologo.
Contrary to speculation that he had stepped away from music, Burning Doctor said there was never a break from his calling.
“Nothing kept me away. It was just not the right time,” he said.
The album, which took four years to complete, reflects his personal experiences and the realities facing society today. The title Dologo carries a deeply symbolic meaning.
“Dologo is like a surname. I chose it because it identifies a person who has lost their identity,” he explained.
Through the album, Burning Doctor hopes to encourage listeners not to lose hope despite life's hardships.
“No matter what people may say, you must carry on living because what didn't create you cannot break you,” he said.
The recording process was not without its challenges. Burning Doctor revealed that financial constraints made the journey difficult, but he refused to give up.
“There were financial problems, but I kept going,” he said.
The album was produced with the assistance of Ananius Begwa, whom Burning Doctor credited with helping bring the project to life.
Reflecting on the South African reggae scene, Burning Doctor said the genre had made significant progress, although increased airplay remained essential if reggae was to continue growing and reaching wider audiences. Despite changes in the music industry, he insisted he would never compromise his identity to chase trends.
