The police are investigating the cause of the accident that claimed the lives of three people.
Preliminary reports, in the meantime, suggest that poor visibility and wet roads contributed to the accident that occurred at the N1/Eltivillas intersection last Wednesday evening. According to witnesses, the accident occurred when the driver of a light delivery truck collided with a heavy vehicle that was busy crossing the intersection.
As it was very dark, the smaller truck apparently did not see the other truck in the intersection and, due to slippery road conditions after a rainstorm, could not stop in time.
A total of five passengers were inside the cab of the small truck. The driver and two passengers were killed on impact. The other two passengers were seriously injured and taken to hospital. As far as the newspaper was able to determine, they were taken to the provincial hospital in Polokwane.
Makhado police spokesperson Const Irene Radzilane confirmed that the survivors' condition was critical but stable. Radzilane said the names of the deceased would be made available as soon as all the next of kin had been informed.
