Teams from various sporting codes who performed well during the finals of the Makhado Sport tournament received lucrative prizes during the awards ceremony that was held at the Sampson Phophi Stadium last Friday.
The tournament was sponsored with an amount of more than R140 000. The mayor of the Makhado Local Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, applauded those who received awards and described them as ambassadors for their communities.
He also emphasised the importance of sport and education for the future of the youth. He said that the main purpose of the event was to motivate the players to work hard in their matches. He also described sport is an important vehicle to cause harmonious interaction between people.
He said that the youth should become involved in different sporting codes and that sport and education were the keys to the future of the youth. He requested them to stay away from crime and alcohol and to be aware of the threat of HIV/Aids.
The next edition of this tournament is likely to take place at the Waterval Stadium next year. Mbhokota FC were crowned as the champions of the soccer and they went home with R3 000, a floating trophy, gold medals and a new soccer kit. The winners in the netball, Waterval region, received R2 000, a floating trophy and new netball kit. Vleifontein Votex are the kings of basketball and they received R2 000.
