The deputy chairperson of the National Albinism Task Force, Mr Thomas "The White Man" Makhanthisa, said a new programme had been launched to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people living with albinism.

The deputy chairperson of the National Albinism Task Force, Mr Thomas "The White Man" Makhanthisa, said a new programme had been launched to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people living with albinism.

September is Albinism Awareness Month in South Africa, dedicated to promoting understanding, combating stigma and protecting the rights of those affected.

Makhanthisa, who also chairs the Vhembe District Disability Forum, said this year's campaign tied in with the 2025 International Albinism Awareness Day theme, focusing on equal access to healthcare – particularly skin-cancer prevention – and greater social inclusion.

On Tuesday, the team visited Thulamela Local Municipality and Musina to engage communities on preserving the dignity of people living with albinism. The core message of the campaign is: "Demand Our Rights, Protect Our Skin, and Preserve Our Lives."

Makhanthisa dismissed claims that poor children with albinism were being denied sun-protection lotions due to corruption. He stressed that all registered recipients continue to receive their supply monthly, and that organisations are working to ensure fair distribution.
