Up-and-coming reggae and dance-hall artist Phethani "Mr Big Spliff" Mphaphuli released his debut reggae album titled "The Mission" on June 26 this year.

In an interview with Limpopo Mirror, Big Spliff elaborated on the main track of the album, called "Change the System," which refers to the suffering that the people of this country are currently facing. "Since our country attained democracy in 1994, nothing has changed when it comes to the standard of living, especially for the poor. Those in power are using the same system that was employed by the previous government. All they did was put a black face in government, but they continued to use the same system," he said.

He reckons that the government needs to change the system if they want to improve the standard of living in the country. "I say, change the Babylon system of doing things. The ruling party has failed dismally in leading the Rasta man from abject poverty to Zion. My album addresses issues of suffering and struggling to survive head-on. This government must listen. If they don't, the Rastas will continue calling for change until we achieve financial freedom as a people," he said.

Big Spliff recorded his debut dance-hall album, "The Soul Rebel," in April this year. Although this album is primarily aimed at providing entertainment to the masses, it also addresses issues surrounding service delivery.
