Soccer lovers from around Vhembe are still shocked, following the recent sudden death of well-known soccer coach and former player of Dynamos FC, Alushavhiwi "Jomo" Mamphasa (53) of Tshivhidulu.

Soccer lovers from around Vhembe are still shocked, following the recent sudden death of well-known soccer coach and former player of Dynamos FC, Alushavhiwi "Jomo" Mamphasa (53) of Tshivhidulu.

He died after a short illness in the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital on Monday.

During his heydays, he played for teams such as Tshivhidulu Hungry Lions, Shayandima Bobs Stars and the then PSL team, Dynamos FC. He later became involved in the development of young players and coached Tshivhidulu Hungry Lions.

Mamphasa was a clerk at the Department of Water Affairs in Thohoyandou.

A family member, Mr Junior Mamphasa, said the family members were in huge pain. He said the family was proud to have produced "one of the most valuable members of the community".

The secretary of Safa Vhembe, Mr Mulimisi Muneri, said the football family had lost one of its pillars, someone who had always been working hard towards the development of the soccer. "We have been with him for many years. We used to visit him even during his last days and he could not stop talking about soccer."

He is survived by his wife, four children, brothers and parents. He will be buried on Sunday at Tshivhidulu. The funeral will start at 06:00.
