Young footballers in the Collins Chabane municipal district will have a chance to catch the attention of professional scouts after the municipality launched its annual Mayoral Cup on Monday, 13 July.
This year's tournament is about more than lifting a trophy. It will also be used to identify talented players from teams registered in official local leagues, organisers said.
The tournament will be run in partnership with Gomora United FC. Scouts will attend matches to identify talented players from local teams.
Gomora United FC owner Joe Seanego attended the launch. Also present were Hosi Rhangani Resenga Mahonisi of the Mahonisi Traditional Council, councillors and members of the Collins Chabane Local Municipality Sports Council.
Mayor Shadrack Maluleke said the tournament aims to create opportunities for young people. He added that sport unites communities and keeps young people positively engaged. The Mayoral Cup is one of the municipality's biggest annual sporting events.
