On Tuesday morning, the spokesperson for the council, Musanda Vho-Luvhaivhai Tshivhase, issued a media statement encouraging Vhembe residents to follow prevention steps as a vaccine for the virus has not yet been found.

"The number of victims is growing, and we find it of paramount important to encourage the traditional leadership and the entire nation to stand up in arms and fight against the spreading of this deadly disease," Tshivhase said in a statement.

"Our people must take this coronavirus seriously and must start working together by following all the precautionary measures steps as stipulated by the national government."

Tshivhase further appealed to all community structures, such as churches, schools, soccer associations, businesses, farmers, the transportation industry and others, to assist in order to reduce spreading of the virus.

"The coronavirus is not a joke but a reality and lives are lost. We humbly request those members of the community who have clean water to assist those who cannot access clean water, and the district municipality must also provide clean water to our disadvantaged rural communities."
