David Hungwe brings hope for water-starved community

Water scarcity has become one of the most pressing issues in the Vhembe region over the last few years, leaving communities in dire straits, with some even resorting to using contaminated water unfit for human consumption.

Water scarcity has become one of the most pressing issues in the Vhembe region over the last few years, leaving communities in dire straits, with some even resorting to using contaminated water unfit for human consumption.

In 2016, a ray of hope emerged when 61-year-old Phineas Madaela, a resident of Mammburu village in Tshituni, took it upon himself to tackle the water crisis. Convinced that he would find water underground, Madaela embarked on a personal mission to dig a well in his yard. Armed with just a pick and shovel, he began the arduous task. After 15 days of persistent digging, he struck water at seven metres deep, bringing much-needed relief and joy to the whole community.

To capitalise fully on this discovery, the community needed assistance in laying a pipeline from Madaela's well to a central point, where tanks could be stationed. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) caught wind of the initiative and pledged their support, even promising to add another borehole. However, much to the deep disappointment of Madaela and the community, this promise was never fulfilled, leaving the well unused.

Meanwhile, in the village of Ha-Lambani Satane, located outside Thohoyandou, another brave individual decided to take matters into his own hands. Facing desperation because of prolonged water shortages, 31-year-old David Trynos Hungwe, armed with a pick, spade, stepladder, and other tools, embarked on a similar quest to find water. After three gruelling days of digging, Hungwe struck water at 12 metres underground, immediately becoming the talk of the village and attracting a stream of admirers keen to witness this incredible feat - water right beneath their feet!

Hungwe, who is currently unemployed, felt compelled to act when it became apparent that the water problem in the area was not going to be resolved by the authorities. For years, the community had been suffering without access to a reliable water supply, forcing many residents to compete with animals for water from local rivers. Despite promises from the government, the water supply remained unreliable.

Encouraged by his success in finding water, Hungwe sees this discovery as an opportunity to benefit not only his own family but also the entire community. The water from the well has been tested and approved, bringing excitement and hope to the villagers.

However, to utilise the borehole fully, pipes, and a pump are needed to pump the water out. As an unemployed individual, Hungwe cannot afford these essentials and is making a heartfelt appeal to the government or any Good Samaritan to come forward and support the completion of the project. He emphasises that this initiative is not solely about him but is for the entire community, and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The village headman, Mr Samson Muvhango, lauds Hungwe for his creativity and determination. He believes that the well will alleviate the water problem faced by the community significantly, proving that they do not have to rely on the government only for solutions.
