Local boxer Jansen Mudzanani experienced a night to forget on Friday (23 June) when he suffered an embarrassing TKO defeat in his light-flyweight bout against Rofhiwa Maphupha. The fight, held at Meropa Casino and scheduled over 10 rounds, ended in just one round.
Mudzanani displayed a lack of commitment from the beginning, seemingly hypnotised as his opponent relentlessly cornered him with powerful punches. The referee had no choice but to stop the fight in the first round to prevent Mudzanani from enduring further punishment.
This defeat raises questions about Mudzanani's boxing career as it marks his third consecutive loss. However, Mudzanani remains optimistic and has stated that he will discuss his future with his team. He believes he still has a bright future in boxing and has not yet achieved his dreams.
Maphupha, the victor of the bout, expressed his gratitude to his trainer for his guidance. He shared his goal of progressing further in professional boxing, stating that he felt prepared for the next level.
Having started his boxing journey at a young age, Maphupha emphasised the importance of hard work for achieving positive results. He also mentioned his disbelief in the effectiveness of "muti" (traditional medicine) in the boxing ring.
The tournament organiser, Mr Phathutshedzo Dongola, expressed satisfaction with the event's progress. He revealed plans to host more boxing tournaments before the year's end.
