Department confirms 26 injured in N1 bus accident in Vhembe

Twenty-six people were injured when a bus travelling from Malawi to Johannesburg overturned on the N1 near the Baobab Toll Gate on Monday, 8 June.

A bus carrying about 50 passengers from Malawi to Johannesburg overturned on the N1 near the Baobab Toll Gate between Musina and Louis Trichardt on Monday morning, 8 June, leaving 26 people injured and causing significant traffic delays. The crash occurred about 8 km south of the toll gate.

According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, no fatalities were reported. Preliminary information indicates that the driver lost control of the bus following an alleged mechanical failure. The vehicle subsequently overturned on the busy national route.

Emergency services treated the injured passengers at the scene before transporting them to nearby medical facilities. Twenty-two passengers sustained moderate injuries, while four suffered serious injuries.

Traffic authorities spent much of the day managing the scene and coordinating the recovery operation. By Monday afternoon, motorists were still restricted to using the hard shoulder while towing crews worked to remove the overturned bus.

Long traffic queues formed on the N1 as officials limited traffic flow around the accident scene.

Police and traffic officers remained on site to manage traffic and investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Motorists have been urged to reduce their speed, exercise caution and obey instructions from traffic officials while travelling through the area.
