Born in the rural town of Elim, musician Nxaxa Shikuhele — better known as DJ Crispynator — is fast making a name for himself on the music scene.
Although his career only began in 2022, when he was 15, the now 18-year-old has grown into a DJ, choreographer and producer whose star is shining brighter by the day. He first started mixing sets on Cross DJ and making beats on FL Studio Mobile while in Grade 10 at Elim Secondary School.
"Music became my passion and escape, and I began studying producers like Zan Ten, Mr JazziQ, Vigro Deep and Gman Makubele on the Internet to learn how to create emotions through sound. In 2023, I applied at the Gauteng City College for a sound engineering course, and during matric in 2024, I kept creating and growing. I eventually started with my studies at Gauteng City College in Polokwane this year, where I am taking my music to the next level," he said.
His debut album, Midnight Whispers, a blend of slow jams, deep house and piano, was released on 14 May this year and went viral.
"I recently followed it up with a new album, 012 Lowkeys, that was released on 22 August. I am continuing to grow and refine my sound, and things cannot be more than happening and my levels are steadily improving. I now make music to connect, set moods and share real-life experiences. My music is different because I blend the energy of live mixing with the creativity of producing my own sound, making every track about mood, emotion and real connection," DJ Crispynator said.
He said his long-time dream was to be counted among the country's best and to secure big gigs. "I see myself growing into a recognised artist and producer, performing on big stages, collaborating with major names and building a signature sound that people will carry with them for years to come. With my music, I want to show innovation, provoke thought, and provide perspective, especially for the youth and people who feel limited by their environment," Crispynator said.
