For years, popular DJ and soundman Azwitamisi Daniel Masala, better known as DJ Telkom, has been a central figure in Vhembe. The 41-year-old DJ from Mphego, outside Thohoyandou, is often seen with his bakkie and sound equipment, offering free services during community meetings and marches.

DJ Telkom's bakkie has become known as Libaki la Lushaka (Bakkie of the Nation). Beyond his music, he is actively involved in community activities and serves as the head of the safety and security portfolio in the local committee.

When Masala turned 41 a few weeks ago, fellow DJs—including Khoro, Sbonyoko, Nefuri, Van Tonder, Nozamo, Drum Boss, Malombo, Vhoni Mvp, Thukhutha, and DJ Takkie—came together to honour him. The birthday bash, described as the mother of all bashes, also featured well-known artists such as Gusba Banana, Asa Tee, C2be the Poet, Germany, Mazwale, Lwendo, Ñew Mello, Burning Doctor, Vhanyai vha Ngwena, and Ega Luv.

Pre-parties were held on 1 and 2 February, leading up to the main event on 8 February at Mother City Konanani Tavern in Lwamondo Zwikwengani. It was an electric affair, with DJs and artists delivering high-energy performances. The highlight of the event was a set by veteran DJ Khoro, who left fans wanting more.

Speaking after the celebration, DJ Khoro emphasised the strong bond among local DJs. "We are like one big family and should support each other. DJ Telkom is one of us—he has selflessly made his resources available at any time, often for free. We are here to celebrate him, and we wish him all the best as he continues to serve his community," he said.

An overwhelmed DJ Telkom could not hide his excitement. "This is one of the greatest days of my life. I never knew people appreciated me this much. The work I do for the community comes from passion—I often use money from my own pocket. I never expected this kind of recognition. I am so grateful, and this has motivated me to work even harder," he said.
