The head of the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Dr Matodzi Rathumbu, originally from Madodonga in the Kutama area, was awarded a PhD in Philosophy by the University of the Witwatersrand on 14 July. His thesis was titled The Effects of Trade Barriers on Southern Africa Regional Integration.
Dr Rathumbu believes people live in a world full of possibilities. "Don't use your poor background as an excuse for not going to school and not aiming for a brighter future," he said. "I am also from a poor family, but I used bursaries to go to school," he added.
He obtained his first degree from Stellenbosch University, where he also completed his honours degree in economics. He then worked at Military Intelligence, before moving on to the National Treasury as a senior economist. He later took up the role of chief economist planner at the Gauteng Department of Economic Development. While in that position, he completed a master's degree in economics and a management development programme.
In 2018, Dr Rathumbu joined the Limpopo provincial government as a deputy director-general and was appointed head of LEDET in 2024.
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba congratulated him on his achievement, saying he had proven himself a dedicated leader committed to the advancement of the province.
"It is truly uplifting to witness our departmental leaders enhancing their expertise by achieving significant qualifications. Dr Rathumbu's PhD aligns perfectly with our goals for inclusive growth and job creation in Limpopo. His research addresses key issues such as trade and tariffs, which are crucial in navigating the complexities of the global economy," said Ramathuba.
