Academic Dr Israel Mulaudzi has earned a second doctoral degree, this time in English. Her first PhD was in educational psychology.
She was among the graduates honoured at the recent University of Venda graduation ceremony. The degree took her two years to complete under the supervision of Prof Matodzi Lambani, Prof Ernst Klu and Dr Fhatuwani Nephawe.
Her research explored how digital tools and platforms can support the development of reading proficiency in English First Additional Language (EFAL) among Grade 4 learners in rural schools.
According to Dr Mulaudzi, the study responds to South Africa's ongoing literacy challenges, especially in rural areas where reading outcomes remain low. By identifying innovative digital strategies for EFAL instruction, the research offers evidence-based recommendations for teachers, curriculum developers and policymakers.
Beyond its academic contribution, the work promotes digital inclusion, supports teacher development, and empowers learners through improved engagement and literacy. It plays a key role in helping rural schools adopt 21st-century learning tools and reduce educational inequalities.
"This pursuit represents a strategic and deeply personal commitment to advancing educational excellence and language development in South Africa," said Mulaudzi.
Her career began at Lurenzheni Primary School, where she was later appointed principal. She also lectured part-time at Univen for five years, mentoring future educators.
Dr Mulaudzi is currently a lecturer in the Department of Professional and Curriculum Studies at the University of Venda.
