When Dr Les MopHead drops a beat, it's more than music — it's a reflection of life, culture, and spirit. One of contemporary Venda music's most distinct voices, he blends poetry, hip-hop, and soul, grounded in his Venda identity. "I speak truth through rhythm. Whether it is love, struggle, or faith, I express it with raw honesty," he says.
With three albums and numerous singles under his belt, MopHead's journey has evolved from proving his talent to expressing purpose. He traces his beginnings to high school cyphers and freestyle sessions, balancing music with an IT career until he realised this was more than a hobby — it was a calling.
Venda language and township life remain at the heart of his work. "The rhythm of our language and the energy of the people shape everything I create," he explains.
His latest single, BaBaBa, began as a short TikTok clip on Valentine's Day. Its viral reception inspired him to complete the song, capturing the heartbeat of love. "I want listeners to feel alive in love, to feel that echo in the body," he says.
As an independent artist, MopHead has built his career without a major label, learning discipline, patience, and the importance of purpose along the way. He believes the Venda music scene is entering a powerful era, with artists reaching national and global audiences while staying true to their roots.
Collaboration is guided by emotional alignment rather than fame. He hopes to work with artists such as Ami Faku, Sjava, and Elaine, who share his commitment to storytelling and spiritual expression.
BaBaBa kicks off a new chapter, leading to his forthcoming project, Jackie's Echo Album, exploring themes of love, legacy, and connection.
MopHead's advice to fans and emerging artists is simple: "Your authenticity is your power. Follow the rhythm within."
