Dr Bernard Nthambeleni, the principal of the University of Venda (Univen), has received a vote of confidence from the university's council, leading to an extension of his contract for another five years. Nthambeleni's initial five-year contract, which began in January 2019, was set to expire in December of this year.
Nthambeleni is a highly experienced executive with nearly 30 years of experience in the higher-education sector. He succeeded Professor Peter Mbati as the principal of Univen. During his first term, Nthambeleni demonstrated strong leadership skills and achieved notable success, leading to the unanimous decision by the university council to extend his contract.
Chairperson of the council Mr Juneas Lekgetha praised Nthambeleni for his accomplishments. Lekgetha highlighted Nthambeleni's role in transforming Univen into a top university with significant achievements. Under his leadership, the university underwent significant infrastructure development, improving its visibility and leading to a ranking among the top 15 universities in South Africa, according to Times Higher Education World Rankings. Lekgetha also acknowledged Nthambeleni's financial management skills and his commitment to the university's best interests.
Nthambeleni expressed gratitude for the council's confidence in him and stated his commitment to leading Univen to become a world-class institution of higher learning. With his contract extension, Nthambeleni will continue his focused leadership to guide the university towards higher achievements, implementing the objectives outlined in the Strategic Plan 2021-2025.
