Dumisani Mabobo’s alleged killer abandoned his bail application during his appearance at the Waterval Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 17 April. Khomola Lufuno (29), known locally as Xinkwa, appeared in court after being arrested two weeks ago in connection with Mabobo’s murder.
Outside court, more than 50 residents gathered after walking more than two kilometres from Elim Mall. They called for the suspect to be denied bail and demanded justice for Mabobo. Khomola told the court he was abandoning his bail application “at this stage” and did not give reasons.
Mabobo (21) was stabbed and robbed of his laptop in the early hours of 23 June 2024 near the Hubyeni Shopping Complex in Elim. His body was later found behind a local grocery store. The killing sparked outrage in the community. Khomola was reportedly arrested at the time but later released due to a lack of evidence linking him to the crime.
Despite footage showing a man believed to be Khomola running towards Furnmart at the shopping complex while carrying a laptop, police said there was insufficient evidence. He was re-arrested on 10 April, nearly two years after the murder.
His arrest follows a recent shutdown, during which more than 100 residents from Elim and surrounding villages marched to the Waterval Police Station, demanding stronger action against violent crime.
Mabobo’s mother, Popi Maluleke, said she was relieved the suspect would remain in custody. “We are relieved he will not be out on bail while my child’s life was cut short. We are also satisfied with how the court [case] is proceeding,” she said.
Limpopo police spokesperson Captain Vuledzani Dathi confirmed the suspect had appeared in court last week following his arrest. The case was postponed to 27 May for further investigation.
