Local author Wilson Dzebu scooped two prestigious awards for his debut short story collection, Dzo rwa Gona, at the 2025 MIA Creative Writing and Literature Awards ceremony held at Jack Botes Hall, Polokwane, on 18 December.
The MIA Creative Writing and Literature Awards is an annual national initiative that rotates across South African provinces to honour writers, poets, and storytellers who are breaking barriers and redefining the country’s literary landscape. A movement to elevate African voices and narratives, the awards also promote the preservation of African indigenous languages, culture, and traditions.
Dzebu’s book, published in April last year, received three nominations: Best Short Story Book, Best Traditional Book, and Best Book Cover. He won the Best Short Story Book and Best Traditional Book awards.
Dzebu said he could hardly believe his ears when his name was called twice to ascend the stage in the fully packed hall. “Being recognised among the best was like a dream come true. Considering that the ceremony was a national event in Limpopo, I realised this was a massive achievement that deserves celebration. Although I did not write my book for fame, I am delighted that my hard work has finally been recognised.”
He thanked everyone who supported him throughout his writing journey. “I wouldn’t have achieved this on my own. These two awards are dedicated to all who encouraged me to work hard and realise my potential in the literary field. Special thanks to Prof Walter Muloiwa, who discovered my writing talent about 30 years ago.”
Dzebu encouraged others in the creative sector to pursue their passions. “If you do what you love without expecting rewards, opportunities will come naturally. It is important to love your work and approach it with focus and dedication.”
