More than 1 600 Univen students received their qualifications during the university's graduation ceremony last Thursday and Friday.
The qualifications were conferred by the chancellor of the university, Mr Kgalema Motlanthe.
Among the graduates was former PSL star Mulondo Sikhwivhilu, who received a bachelor of environmental sciences degree. Sikhwivhilu (33) said it had always been his wish to complete his studies to prepare for life after soccer. He said it was painful to see that most of former soccer stars are now penniless and some even taking ordinary jobs after a life of glory.
"I have come to realize that the soccer career is very short and that many have hit hard times after being in the limelight and leading a life of glamour. With education, one is secure for life and has something to fall back on when days are dark on the soccer field," he said.
He said he was also encouraging youngsters to take education seriously and not to rush to make a quick buck before securing their future. "Education is the key that can open closed doors for a sportsman or artist. One must be able to read and understand contracts and also have somewhere to go when one's sporting career is over," he said.
Sikhwivhilu played for, among others, Black Leopards, Orlando Pirates, Supersport United, Dynamos and Bay United.
In congratulating Sikhwivhilu, the chief whip of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tshifhiwa Dali, said Sikhwivhilu was an inspiration to the youth. "The route Sikhwivhilu took is the right one that the youth could follow. Many of our players are buried paupers after glorious soccer careers because of a lack of education. We encourage others to follow in his footsteps," said Dali.
Speaking during the ceremony, Mr Kgalema Motlanthe urged all recipients to make a difference by contributing to their communities and country.
