With the African continent grappling with social ills such as gender-based violence, war and disease, one artist is using his music to call for unity and healing.
Popular ZCC mukhukhu gospel musician Rendani Edwell Ndou – known in gospel circles simply as Edwell Ndou – has just released a new album, Vha Pfe Murena, which includes the standout track Afurika. The song has taken the gospel-music scene by storm.
The 40-year-old, multiple award-winning artist from Siambe, outside Thohoyandou, launched the 10-track album last week. It was recorded at Blue Black Studios in Kempton Park with renowned producer and studio owner Terrence Morgan.
Speaking about the new release, Ndou said he was optimistic the album would resonate with listeners across the continent. "I am that musician who sings about topical issues, sending important messages to the nation. The hit track Afurika is a plea and a prayer to God to have mercy on Africa, which is bedevilled with many ills. Our continent is bleeding, with many being killed in civil wars. Africa is also home to many disastrous diseases that are threatening to wipe communities from the face of the earth. We need to come together as one and pray. God will hear us and heal our land," he said.
Ndou also urged newcomers in the music industry to pursue their craft with passion rather than chasing fame or money.
His musical journey began in 1993 at the Tshiungani ZCC church, where he was appointed leader of the mukhukhu group at a young age. But it was only after moving to Siambe in 1998 that his music career truly took off. By chance, the late Tshivenda music legend Mutendas visited the Tshififi church where Ndou performed, and it was there that his talent was spotted – the beginning of a long and fruitful career.
Today, Ndou boasts 11 albums and has shared stages with gospel luminaries such as Winnie Mashaba, Simon Makgathulela, Tau Diarora, Asnath Mulaudzi, Avhatendi Matumba, Rofhiwa Manyaga and Worship House.
With five awards to his name, he is currently nominated in two categories – Best Male Legend and Best Sione Album – at the Royal Gospel Music Awards (ROYGMA).
