EFF condemns failure of R486 million water project in Vhembe

The EFF has condemned the R486 million bulk water project in Limpopo, which has left Chavani and surrounding villages without water despite significant expenditure. The party is calling for an independent audit and accountability for this "betrayal of public trust."

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Limpopo has condemned the failed implementation of the R486 million bulk water project in Chavani and surrounding villages, saying communities are still without running water despite millions already having been spent.

According to the party, the situation amounts to “a betrayal of public trust and a violation of the basic human right to water”. It said the project cost increased from R318m to R486m, while households in villages such as Chavani and Bungeni continue to rely on buying water or travelling long distances to access it.

In a statement issued on Monday, 25 May, the party also criticised what it described as a lack of accountability, saying residents had not received clear answers regarding contractor performance, delays and plans to restore water supply.

The EFF called for an independent audit into the project, intervention by the Department of Water and Sanitation, and action against officials and contractors responsible for the failed implementation.

“People of Chavani, Bungeni, and surrounding villages deserve more than excuses. They deserve water in their taps, dignity in their lives, and accountability from those entrusted with public funds,” the statement read.

The party’s reaction follows a recent Limpopo Mirror report (Click here for report) highlighting residents’ frustrations over the Chavani bulk pipeline and water reticulation project, which was intended to provide potable water to more than 40,000 households.
