Residents of Elim Mabobo gathered near the Elim Hubyeni Shopping Complex on Tuesday, 31 March, to confront a man accused of abusing his girlfriend. The incident drew a large crowd and ended with police intervention.
Community members said the man, believed to be a sangoma, had assaulted his girlfriend. During the confrontation, women, including elderly residents, intervened and disciplined him with tree branches.
The incident appears to have stemmed from an earlier confrontation between the couple. People who knew the woman then contacted others to ask her to come to the scene.
The girlfriend later arrived and showed the community where she had allegedly been beaten and stabbed.
The matter was discussed openly in front of residents, who later decided to forgive the man after hearing both sides.
Police said the couple have two children and that the dispute arose from relationship issues. They also said the couple are from Zimbabwe and do not have permits.
Police from Waterval arrived shortly afterwards and rescued the man from the crowd. Both individuals were taken to the police station.
Authorities indicated that, although the couple reconciled, they may face charges related to illegal immigration.
