A 24-year-old former bank official, who was connected to a well-known banking institution in Louis Trichardt, was arrested by police in Louis Trichardt earlier this week on a charge of theft.

The arrest follows after allegations that he used his banking knowledge to draw money for himself from the accounts of unsuspecting clients. Thousands of rands are involved. Police also arrested the man's 23-year-old girlfriend, suspected of being an accomplice.

The suspect banked his takings into several other bank accounts and allegedly bought a brand new car and expensive jewels. He also paid for several trips and hotel accommodation. A large amount of cash has been recovered.

At the time of going to press, it could not be confirmed whether the suspect had appeared in court yet.
