The gushing winds that swept through the region on Tuesday took their toll in Louis Trichardt when a huge tree in Joubert Street tipped over and came crashing down on top of two cars parked in its shade. The owners of the Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Corolla said that Mother Nature appeared to have decided to play a prank that had gone terribly wrong.
The owner of the Polo, Ms Elelwani Nemakonde from Makhado Park, said she was working at a construction site when the incident happened. "It happened during lunchtime. I heard a very loud noise, and when I turned around, I saw a cloud of dust and someone told me that a tree fell on my car. I thought I was dreaming. I had bought the car only two years ago," she said.
Mr Malange Phenius, the station officer at the Makhado Fire Department, said they had responded to the call to assist the motorists. "We received a call that a big tree had fallen on top of a car. Our task was only to cut the tree and remove the branches. This was no one's fault. It was merely an old tree that fell unexpectedly," he said.
