The Farm Oasis, a poultry and vegetable business in Zamenkomste near Hakutama, Makhado, won the commercial sector at the Vhembe Female Entrepreneur Awards on 15 August, receiving R18,000.
Represented by Kedibone Modzhadzhi, the farm operates on six hectares, has an annual turnover exceeding R1.5 million, and employs five permanent and two seasonal workers. "Hard work, patience and sacrifice brought us here," said Modzhadzhi. "As rural women, we've created jobs for ourselves and others. It is better to build our own businesses than wait for handouts."
The farm sells to formal markets, local communities, Spar in Vivo, and various spaza shops.
The annual awards, organised by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in partnership with the Vhembe District Municipality, aim to encourage women to pursue agriculture, create jobs, and secure local food production. Namadzavho Sikhipha of the department said the competition, running since 1999, showcased women's commitment to farming.
Acting Executive Mayor Shonisani Sinyosi praised the winners for their resilience. "Across industries—from agriculture to tech, fashion to finance—women are breaking barriers, building businesses, and transforming the economy," she said. "For many, entrepreneurship is not just a career; it is a path to survival, empowerment, and self-worth."
