Fashion designers and models from across the Vhembe District stand to benefit from an initiative aimed at nurturing local talent and providing a platform for young creatives to showcase their abilities.
The inaugural Mveledziso Annual Fashion Show, an initiative of the Mveledziso School of Fashion and Design, is set to become the first fashion competition in Vhembe where designers compete for a cash prize, while participating models will also receive remuneration. The event has already attracted more than 20 designers from across the district, while about 15 models are expected to appear on the runway.
Model auditions began on 27 June as organisers started preparations for what they hope will become a flagship event on the regional fashion calendar.
Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Muano Maregwa, director of Dressed by Muano, said the show was inspired by the limited opportunities available to young and aspiring designers and models in the region.
“There are many gifted young people in Vhembe with exceptional fashion skills, creativity and passion, but they often do not have platforms where they can exhibit their work, gain recognition and connect with industry players,” Maregwa said.
He added that all participants are from Vhembe, making the event a celebration of local talent and a showcase of the district’s untapped potential in the fashion industry.
A cash prize of R4,000 awaits the winning designer, while participating models will also be compensated. Four judges have been appointed to adjudicate the competition, assessing contestants on creativity, originality, range of designs, presentation and overall garment quality.
“Our message to upcoming designers and models is simple: believe in your talent and never stop learning. Fashion is a competitive industry and success comes to those who remain committed to improving their craft,” he said.
