The father-and-son pair who were arrested after the shooting incident at the Denga Tshivhase High School last week are expected to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court today (26 February).

The 16-year-old boy allegedly took his 37-year-old father's pistol and used it to shoot a fellow pupil at the school, near the Phiphidi Village.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the young boy was involved in an heated argument with another 18-year-old student in the bathroom of the school. The incident occurred on Friday, 23 February.

The wounded 18-year-old was admitted to a local hospital, where he is currently recovering.

Following the incident, both the young boy and his father were placed under arrest. They will face charges of attempted murder and the negligent keeping of a firearm respectively. Mojapelo also said that the father would face an additional charge of the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition after it had come to light that he did not have the necessary license for the firearm.

In the meantime, the police are busy investigating the origin of the firearm to determine if it could possibly have been used in the committing of a crime.
