The police in Thohoyandou are investigating a case of murder after the lifeless body of a 14-month-old toddler, Manwatha Ndingatshilidzi, was discovered in an abandoned house at Ha-Mphego village on Saturday, 4 January, around noon.

The suspect, who is still on the run, has been identified as Rudzani Dzhabuli.

According to police reports, the toddler's body was found covered with a blue jacket, with his head resting on a red shirt. A denim jumpsuit was placed nearby. Disturbing injuries were evident, including blood in the child's nostrils and ears, as well as wounds on his legs.

Vhembe police spokesperson W/O Vuledzani Dathi, provided more details about the investigation, which began after a police officer received a report of the murder. "After rushing to the scene, the officer was led by a concerned community member who had alerted us. It is alleged that the child's biological father, now the prime suspect, sent an SMS to a family member, instructing them to check the abandoned house," Dathi said.

The tragic events are believed to have started on 2 January, when the suspect allegedly took the toddler from her mother forcefully. Reports also suggest that the suspect kidnapped the child's mother, who was later found and taken to a local hospital for medical care. The suspect, however, remains at large.

Police are urging anyone with information that could assist in locating the suspect or advancing the investigation to contact the investigating officer, Capt Takalani Siaga, at (082) 469-2302.

The incident has left the Ha-Mphego community in shock and mourning. Azwitamisi Masala, a safety and security representative from the Mphego SANCO branch, said the local community was shocked and angered by the senseless killing of such a young life.

"We are deeply hurt. Losing such an innocent life is devastating. This child knew nothing about the violence between the parents and could have grown to be a leader or someone important in our community," Masala lamented. He also appealed to the community to assist the police in apprehending the suspect. "If anyone sees the suspect or has any information about his whereabouts, they must come forward and contact the police immediately," he urged.
