Fears grow for missing fisherman at Maluleke Dam

Police are investigating the disappearance of Thomas Hasani Hlungwani, last seen fishing at Maluleke Dam on 27 February. His belongings were found, and divers are searching as crocodile attacks are feared, though foul play is also being considered. The community is raising funds for a traditional healer to aid the ongoing investigation.

Police in Saselamani are investigating a missing person case after a local man disappeared while fishing at Maluleke Dam in Thlaveni Block D, Malamulele. Thomas Hasani Hlungwani, 43, was last seen on Friday, 27 February.

According to police, Hlungwani went to the dam to fish but did not return home. When he failed to come back, family members became concerned and searched the area. They found his bucket floating on the water and his bicycle parked near the shore.

Police divers were at the dam on Tuesday searching for the missing man. There are fears he may have been attacked by crocodiles while fishing. Despite searching the water, police did not find any trace of him and said they would return on Wednesday to continue the search.

Community members have begun collecting R10 contributions to hire a traditional healer (sangoma) to help determine what may have happened. They want clarity on whether he was attacked by crocodiles or if criminal activity could have been involved.

Police investigations are ongoing. Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the disappearance. Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact Saselamani Police Station or the nearest police station.
