What type of Solar System is for you?
1. On-grid – A solar inverter system with panels only, no battery storage and with a grid-connection. This system has no back-up if grid power fails. It's simply to same power during daylight hours when the grid is available.
2. Off-grid – A solar inverter system with panels, battery storage and no grid-connection. Stand-alone system. This system has totally no connection to the grid and only draws power from the solar panels during daylight hours to power the load and store power in the battery bank. At night or during cloudy weather days it relies on the battery bank for power. So its recommend to have an oversize battery bank which can be costly.
3. Hybrid – A solar inverter system is with solar panels (solar power) or without solar panels (back-up only), with a battery storage and with a grid-connection. With Hybrid system with solar panels is recommended. This is the most common system in residential households in South Africa. It blends power from the grid connection, solar panels and battery to ensure you have a seamless power supply and reduces your grid power costs. You are also able to store solar energy that is generated during the day and using it at night. When the stored energy is depleted, the grid is there as a backup, allowing you to have the best of both worlds. Hybrid systems also have the advantage of powering your loads during load shedding. The cost of this system is less than an off-grid system. The most common size of Hybrid systems for residential use in South Africa is 5kw, 8kw, and 12kw.
