Five arrested after Dzanani court protest spills onto R523

Five men were arrested for public violence after a protest outside Dzanani Magistrate’s Court escalated to blocking the R523 road on Friday, 19 June. Police stabilised the situation, clearing obstructions and restoring traffic flow.

A protest outside the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court and the subsequent blocking of a major road led to the arrest of five men for public violence on Friday, 19 June.

The suspects, aged between 19 and 38, were arrested after community members from Tshikuwi village staged a protest at the magistrate’s court.

The protest later moved to the R523 road connecting Luvhalani and Wylliespoort. Police were called to the court at around 07:15 after protesters gathered at the premises.

Officers engaged with the crowd and urged them to remain calm and avoid damaging property. While conducting stop-and-search operations in the Dzanani area, police received reports that community members had blocked the R523 with stones and electricity poles, disrupting traffic along the route.

Public Order Policing members were deployed to the scene, where they stabilised the situation and cleared the obstruction, restoring the flow of traffic. Five men were arrested during the operation and charged with public violence.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 22 June, on charges related to the protest.

Police have not disclosed the motive for the protest, and investigations are continuing.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed the arrests and said police were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
