Five young men briefly appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate's Court on Monday for allegedly gang-raping a 22-year-old woman.

The incident occurred at Ha-Rathidili village in the Sinthumule area last Friday.

According to the police, three of the accused are 18, one is 19 and one is 20 years old. It is alleged that the five dragged the woman into the bush and repeatedly raped her, one after the other.

The victim, who is a resident of Elim, had just visited her relative in the village when the incident happened. She was coming from a bar lounge with her boyfriend when the five accused approached them. It is alleged that they threatened to stab the woman's boyfriend and he then ran away, leaving them with his girlfriend.

W/O Godwin Mahuwa said the police had opened a case of rape and investigations were still continuing.

The case was postponed to 13 December, while the five remain in custody.
