Police arrested five suspects for the murder of Majama Glen Nkuna, whose body was found near Elim Hospital. The community, concerned about rising violence, plans a shutdown and march to demand stronger action against crime.

Waterval police arrested five suspects on Tuesday in connection with the murder of Majama Glen Nkuna (38), whose body was discovered near the gate of Elim Hospital earlier this month. Nkuna’s body was found at about 03:00 on Sunday, 8 March.

His killing raised concerns among residents about safety in the area. Vhembe SAPS spokesperson Captain Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that five suspects had been arrested.

“Five suspects aged between 32 and 37 have been arrested in connection with the murder. They are expected to appear before the Waterval Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 12 March,” said Dathi.

Police said Nkuna had reportedly been involved in a heated argument with suspects travelling in a green bakkie shortly before the incident. He was later found with stab wounds. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Nkuna was declared dead.

Nkuna’s younger brother, Wisani Nkuna, said the family was relieved that suspects had been arrested. He added that they hoped the suspects, if found guilty, would be harshly punished.

Residents say violent incidents in the area have increased in recent weeks. About four weeks earlier, the body of Tivani Maluleke (41) from Mbhokota village was found in Mahonisi near Elim. Community members are planning a shutdown and a march to the Waterval Police Station on Friday, 13 March, to demand stronger action against violent crime.

Nkuna will be buried at the Elim graveyard on Saturday, 14 March. Police investigations into the murder are continuing.
