Few voices carry the same weight on Venda's contemporary R&B and Afropop scene as Fizzy. Known for his smooth delivery and heartfelt lyrics, he has spent more than a decade building a reputation as one of the region's most enduring musical talents. Now, with the release of his fourth studio album, Friends and Family, Fizzy is once again reshaping expectations – this time by stepping boldly into the Venrap space.

Fizzy's musical journey began in the early 2000s. He recalls falling in love with music during his high school years in 2003, when it was a constant presence in his life – whether playing at home, in the car, or at family functions. But the turning point came in 2004, when he was introduced to the music production software FL Studio.

"Something about the way it made me feel – how it could express emotions I could not put into words – just captivated me. From then on, I was hooked," he said.

Having built his name in R&B and Afropop, Fizzy says his recent creative evolution did not come from abandoning his roots, but from embracing new dimensions of expression.

"I have always had a deep love for R&B – there is something timeless about its soul and vulnerability," he explained. "But as I grew older, I started exploring new sounds that reflected where I was mentally and creatively. The Venrap scene felt like the perfect place to merge that emotional core with something more raw, more urgent, and deeply rooted in our Venda culture."

The result is Friends and Family, a 14-track album Fizzy describes as a statement piece. It is not just another body of work – it is personal, reflective and daring.

"This project strips away all the noise and gets to the core of what matters: the people who shaped me, held me down, challenged me, and kept me grounded," he said.

Sonically, the album is a blend of soul, Venrap and raw emotion. It features storytelling that is both deeply personal and widely relatable. "Every track feels like a conversation – sometimes with myself, sometimes with people I have lost or outgrown, and sometimes with those still riding with me," Fizzy said. "It is genre-bending, emotionally layered, and fearless."

The creative process behind Friends and Family brought together an impressive roster of collaborators. He worked with longtime peers such as Kashflowtoofab, Geenkon, Prifix, Batondy, Pro Heed, Vendaboy Poet and Romeo ThaGreatwhite, as well as newer voices, including Khustar RT, Pross Boy, Volcano and OneTime Muimbi. Production was led by Fix Flow SA and Tonicb3atz RSA, with lyrical contributions from established Venrap heavyweights such as Metro CMG and Asa Tee.

"It was not just about making tracks – it was about building moments, real ones," Fizzy said. "Collaborating with people who understood the vision and were not afraid to experiment pushed me in ways I had not tapped into before."

Balancing R&B's softness with Venrap's raw edge was a deliberate artistic choice. Fizzy approached it by letting melodies carry the emotional depth, while layering in sharper, more urgent lyrical content.

"It is like smooth and sharp at the same time," he said. "I do not see them as opposites – they complement each other. That contrast is what makes my sound hit differently."

One of the defining moments in the album's creation came during the final stages of mixing and mastering.

"We played the album straight through – no skips – and it felt cinematic," he said. "Hearing Ria Fana featuring Asa Tee with fresh ears gave me chills. That is when I knew this was going to shift something."

Fizzy believes the South African music industry is ready for this kind of genre fusion – even if it does not yet fully realise it. "This blend of Afropop, R&B and Venrap brings a fresh sound – rooted in culture but forward-thinking in delivery," he said. "It is powerful because it challenges the industry's idea of where great music can come from. We are not asking for space – we are creating our own lane."

After more than 13 years in the industry, Fizzy remains driven by purpose and curiosity.

"I have learned to keep my ears open and stay a student of the craft," he said. "Every chapter of life brings a new story to tell, and that is what keeps the fire burning."
