Businesses owned by foreign nationals along Songozwi Street in Louis Trichardt have reopened after temporarily closing earlier this week amid nationwide protests targeting undocumented foreign nationals.

A visit to the area on Friday, 3 July, found that most shops had resumed trading, with customers once again moving in and out. The street, which had appeared unusually quiet during the closures, has returned to its usual busy atmosphere.

The reopening follows the temporary closure of several businesses on 30 June and 1 July amid concerns over possible unrest linked to calls for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa. The closures affected workers, customers and taxi operators who depend on the daily flow of commercial activity in the town.

Community members expressed hope that stability would be maintained so businesses could continue operating and employees could retain their jobs.

Although trading has resumed, some foreign shop owners remain concerned about the possibility of future unrest. Several said they were relieved to reopen but hoped concerns surrounding undocumented immigration would be addressed through lawful processes rather than intimidation or violence.

Taxi operators have also welcomed the return of business activity. During the closures, fewer commuters travelled to and from the shopping area, resulting in a decline in passenger numbers. With businesses now open again, transport activity has begun to recover as customer numbers increase.
